Chris Yen, a 24-year-old Asian American filmmaker from San Jose, California, embodies resilience, ambition, and cultural grit. Raised by parents who escaped war-torn Vietnam, Chris channels their sacrifices into his relentless pursuit of storytelling and independent filmmaking. Chris’s passion for film ignited at age 7, evolving from a childhood fascination into a lifelong pursuit. He launched a YouTube channel, mastering shooting, editing, and performance. His comedy sketches amassed over 1 million views, but he sought deeper narratives—stories rich in emotional depth. Inspired by cinematic legends like Francis Ford Coppola, Stanley Kubrick, and Martin Scorsese, and modern visionaries Quentin Tarantino, David Fincher, and Darren Aronofsky, Chris refined his directorial voice. He also drew from Vietnamese arts, infusing his work with authentic cultural resonance. Chris’s artistic journey wasn’t confined to film—his passion for music led him to master piano and develop a deep love for hip-hop, seamlessly integrating sound into his visual storytelling.
