Published reviews of Ramayana: Part 1 are divided. Outlook India rated it 2.5 out of 5 on 5 November, while Bollywood Hungama gave it 5 out of 5. This is a summary of what others wrote, not our review.
Outlook's review praised the visual effects, the world-building and Yash's Ravana, but said the film does not fully capture the epic's emotional and moral core. Hollywood Reporter India gave no star rating and called it "media-trained mythology", safe rather than daring. Bollywood Hungama's review called it a grand, emotional epic worth seeing on the biggest screen.
Audience posts collected by Koimoi on X mostly praised Yash's performance, the Jatayu sequence and the visuals; some viewers found parts slow and long. Filmmakers including Karan Johar, Atlee and Mahesh Babu praised the film publicly.
What it means for viewers
The film is in cinemas only, in Hindi and other languages, with a U certificate and a 3 hour 15 minute runtime. Mixed reviews are common for big mythological films, so the trailer is a fair guide to whether its style suits you. JioHotstar will rent it later on a pay-per-view basis; price and date were still not announced on 7 November.
