The story
In 1920, architect Arjun Singh Rathod defies his wealthy Hindu family to marry Lisa, and after his relatives attack the couple, he turns his back on his faith. Arjun takes a contract to survey an old manor in Palampur that is to become a hotel, even though two architects before him died in mysterious circumstances. He and Lisa move into the house. Lisa soon hears strange noises and senses a presence, while Arjun blames her fears on their recent ordeal and pushes ahead with his survey, including a sealed room at the back.

Who it suits
An old-fashioned possession and haunted-house film for viewers who like candlelit period chills over gore. It runs a little over two hours, Prime Video lists it as U/A 13+, and the exorcism scenes may be too frightening for younger children.

Background
1920 is an original story by Vikram Bhatt, who also directed, with a screenplay by Dheeraj Rattan; Wikipedia notes it is loosely inspired by The Exorcist (1973). It marked the film debuts of Rajneesh Duggal and Adah Sharma. After a six-month location search, most of it was shot at Allerton Castle in North Yorkshire, England, over 18 night shifts, much of it lit by candlelight. Adnan Sami composed the songs.
BIG Pictures released the film in cinemas on 12 September 2008. It drew mixed reviews and, according to Wikipedia, grossed ₹14.5 crore against a budget of ₹7 crore. It was also dubbed into Telugu and Tamil as 1920 Gayathri. It is the first film in the 1920 series, followed by 1920: Evil Returns (2012), 1920 London (2016), 1921 (2018) and 1920: Horrors of the Heart (2023), each telling a separate story.
