The story
In Ranchi, Mahendra 'Mahi' Singh Dhoni, son of a pump operator, is a school football goalkeeper until the cricket coach spots his reflexes and makes him a wicket-keeper. He soon becomes the team's big hitter, but small-town cricket offers few openings. To please his father, who wants him to have a secure job, Mahi becomes a ticket collector at Kharagpur railway station and squeezes in practice around his shifts. Torn between a steady government job and a long-shot cricket career, he must decide how far he will gamble on his talent.
Spoiler-free: only the set-up.
Who it suits
Cricket fans and families can watch this U-rated biopic together, though its runtime of over three hours calls for an evening set aside. It focuses on Dhoni's early struggles, job and relationships more than on match action.

Background
M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story dramatises the life of Mahendra Singh Dhoni, the former India captain across Tests, ODIs and T20Is. The idea came from his manager Arun Pandey after the 2011 World Cup final. Dhoni gave his consent and served as a consultant, and Neeraj Pandey co-wrote and directed.
Fox Star Studios released the film on 30 September 2016 in 61 countries on about 4,500 screens, which Wikipedia describes as the widest release for a Bollywood film at the time. Tamil and Telugu dubs released alongside the Hindi original, while a planned Marathi dub was dropped after opposition. Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand and Maharashtra declared it tax-free. Wikipedia lists a worldwide gross of about ₹215.48 crore, the fifth-highest for a Hindi film in 2016. Sushant Singh Rajput was nominated for Best Actor at the 62nd Filmfare Awards.
