The story
J. Robert Oppenheimer is a brilliant, restless young American physicist who studies in Europe and brings the new field of quantum physics home to Berkeley. During the Second World War, General Leslie Groves recruits him to lead a secret laboratory at Los Alamos in New Mexico, where scientists race to build an atomic bomb before Nazi Germany does. The story moves between those years and a tense 1954 security hearing that questions his loyalty, his politics and his personal life.

Background
Oppenheimer is based on the 2005 biography American Prometheus by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin. Christopher Nolan shot it on IMAX 65 mm and 65 mm film, including scenes in IMAX black-and-white for the first time. Universal Pictures released it in the United States and United Kingdom on 21 July 2023, alongside Barbie, which set off the "Barbenheimer" double-feature trend.
In India, the CBFC passed it with a U/A certificate after scenes of nudity, sex and smoking were censored. A scene in which a verse from the Bhagavad Gita is read drew criticism from Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur. Wikipedia reports it became Nolan's highest-grossing film in India and grossed more than $983 million worldwide. At the 96th Academy Awards it won seven of its 13 nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor for Cillian Murphy and Best Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr.
