Underdog, education and true-story Hindi films to watch after 12th Fail, with where each streams in India, its certificate, runtime and content notes.

These are films for anyone who finished 12th Fail and wants more stories of people from modest beginnings who keep going: true-life struggles, films about education and school, and underdogs who refuse to bend. 12th Fail itself is not a pick, because its JioHotstar listing has so far only been reported and we have not yet confirmed it ourselves.
Every pick has a Hindi audio track and was checked on the platform's Indian app or site; the check date is on each title page. True stories come first, since that is what 12th Fail is, followed by school stories and fictional underdogs. Within each section, picks are ranked by how closely they match its mix of hardship, honesty and hard work, and by how widely they suit families.
On certificates: U suits all ages, U/A and the platform ratings U/A 7+ and 13+ call for parental guidance, and A (Shahid, Jai Bhim) is for adults only.

True stories of perseverance
- 1
Dangal
NetflixCBFC U161 min
Like 12th Fail, this is a real family's long, stubborn climb from a small place, here a Haryana village where Mahavir Singh Phogat trains his daughters to wrestle despite ridicule. Geeta and Babita went on to Commonwealth Games gold. Rated U and 161 minutes long, it is the most family-friendly pick here, and its training-ground discipline will feel familiar to anyone studying for exams.

M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story
Prime VideoCBFC U190 min
The closest match to 12th Fail's middle stretch: a small-town young man takes a safe railway job at Kharagpur station to keep his family happy while squeezing in practice for his real ambition. Neeraj Pandey focuses on Dhoni's early struggle more than famous matches. Rated U, but at 190 minutes it needs a full evening. It suits aspirants weighing security against a long shot.
- 3
Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl
NetflixCBFC U112 min
Gunjan Saxena has to get past training costs, tough medical standards and doubtful colleagues before she can fly in the Kargil combat zone, and the film stays on that struggle rather than the war. Rated U at 112 minutes, it is one of the shorter picks, and her supportive father echoes the family backing in 12th Fail. The IAF objected to parts of its portrayal.

Bhaag Milkha Bhaag
Prime Video (choose the main listing, not the 'English Subtitled' one)CBFC U187 min
Milkha Singh goes from Partition refugee and petty thief to army runner and Olympic finalist, a rise built on discipline as much as talent. It suits viewers who liked 12th Fail's picture of a life turned around by hard work. Rated U but 187 minutes long, it includes Partition violence and a short intimate scene. On Prime Video, choose the main listing.
- 5
Shahid
Prime VideoCBFC A123 min
The pick for adult viewers who connected with 12th Fail's idea of study as a way out. Shahid Azmi begins studying in Tihar Jail, earns a law degree and goes on to defend poor men he believes were wrongly accused of terrorism. Rajkummar Rao won the National Film Award for Best Actor. It is A-certified and 123 minutes long, with police torture and riot violence.

Kaagaz
ZEE5 (Premium)CBFC U/A 13+ (ZEE5 rating)109 min
If the official hurdles in 12th Fail struck a chord, this satire goes straight at the paperwork. Pankaj Tripathi's villager learns that government records list him as dead and spends years arguing otherwise, in a story inspired by the real Lal Bihari. ZEE5 rates it U/A 13+, and it runs 109 minutes with mild humour and no violence, so it works for older children and parents.

Jai Bhim
Prime Video (free; choose Jai Bhim (Hindi))CBFC A164 min
Another real fight against the system, this time in court: lawyer Chandru takes up the case of an Irula tribal woman whose husband vanishes from police custody in 1993. It suits adults moved by 12th Fail's honesty-against-power theme. The Hindi version is free to watch on Prime Video. It carries an A certificate for prolonged custodial torture and runs 164 minutes.
Education and school
- 8
I Am Kalam
Prime Video87 min
The most direct education story here: a bright Rajasthani boy working at a highway dhaba wants a uniform and a seat in school, and renames himself after President APJ Abdul Kalam. At 87 minutes, with a U listing on Prime Video, it is short enough for children to watch with parents. It shares 12th Fail's belief that a poor child's hunger to learn deserves a chance.
- 9
Swades
Netflix (listed as Swades: We, the People)195 min
Education sits at the centre of this slow drama: a NASA project manager returns to a village and finds his childhood friend Geeta running its school amid everyday hardship. Like 12th Fail, it is about choosing service over comfort. There is no violence, so families can watch together, but at 195 minutes it needs a full evening. Netflix lists it as Swades: We, the People.

Stanley Ka Dabba
YouTube (free, Star Studios Premiere channel)96 min
A small school film, shot with real children in a Mumbai classroom, about a fourth-grader who never brings a lunchbox and a greedy teacher who wants everyone else's. Families who liked 12th Fail's quiet portrait of poverty and dignity will find a gentler version here. It runs 96 minutes and is free on the official Star Studios Premiere channel. It touches on child labour.
Underdogs and honest outsiders
- 11
Iqbal
Prime Video (free to watch)132 min
A classic underdog tale: a deaf and mute village teenager wants to bowl for India, with his sister behind him and his father against it. A hard-drinking former cricketer, played by Naseeruddin Shah in a National Award-winning role, becomes his coach. It runs 132 minutes with no graphic content, and Prime Video shows it free to watch, an easy family pick after 12th Fail.

Chak De! India
NetflixCBFC U149 min
Not a true story, but Kabir Khan's effort to rebuild his name by coaching a neglected women's hockey team has the same comeback-after-disgrace pull as 12th Fail. His players come from across India and must learn to work as one side. Rated U and 149 minutes long, it includes a restaurant brawl and some harassment, and works well for a family movie night.
- 13
Newton
Prime VideoCBFC U/A106 min
12th Fail is built around honest officials, and Newton is about one: a rule-bound clerk who insists on a fair vote at a remote polling booth in the Chhattisgarh forest. The humour is dry and the stakes are real. Rated U/A at 106 minutes, it has armed troops and the threat of insurgent violence but little bloodshed. It was India's Oscar entry and suits teens and adults.

Toolsidas Junior
Netflix
A younger underdog: a boy sets out to win back his father's pride on the snooker table after a humiliating club defeat, coached by a gruff, down-at-heel street player. Netflix rates it U/A 7+, so school-age children can join in. It won the National Film Award for Best Hindi Feature Film and suits families who want a lighter story about practice and perseverance.
