The story
In 1947, as Partition uproots millions, Sikander Mirza leaves Meerut with his wife Hameeda, son Javed and daughter Tanvir and crosses into Pakistan. After a harsh spell in a Lahore refugee camp, the family is allotted a large haveli whose Hindu owners have fled to India. It looks like a fresh start, until Sikander finds an elderly Hindu woman, Mai, still living in the house, who calls them trespassers and refuses to leave her ancestral home.
Spoiler-free: only the set-up.
Who it suits
A slower, character-led Partition story for adult viewers; Sunny Deol plays against his action image here. The CBFC rated it A and it runs just under two and a half hours, with the violence and grief of 1947 in the background.

Background
Batwara 1947 is adapted from Asghar Wajahat's Hindi play Jis Lahore Nai Vekhya, O Jamya E Nai. Announced in October 2023 as Lahore 1947, it reunited director Rajkumar Santoshi with Sunny Deol after Ghayal, Damini and Ghatak, and Aamir Khan Productions came on board as producer in 2024. A. R. Rahman composed the music. The title was changed to Batwara 1947 in June 2026.
The film was delayed several times from its planned January 2025 release. The CBFC certified it A on 23 July 2026, and it opened on 14 August 2026, the Independence Day weekend, alongside Awarapan 2 and Hanuman Ansh. Reviews were largely positive, with praise for Shabana Azmi and Sunny Deol, but its box office was modest; Wikipedia lists a gross of ₹49.24 crore. No streaming release had been announced by late October 2026.
