The story
In 17th-century South Malabar, Thevan, a paanan or folk singer, escapes into the forest after a supernatural attack and stumbles on a crumbling mansion. Starving, he is discovered by the house's cook and brought before its aged master, Kodumon Potti, who asks him to sing and then insists he stay there for the rest of his life. The cook warns Thevan not to ask questions or wander into forbidden parts of the house, and tells him of the family's sorcerer ancestor and a vengeful goblin spirit, a chathan.

Who it suits
A slow, claustrophobic black-and-white horror film for viewers who like folklore and psychological dread, much like Tumbbad. SonyLIV rates it U/A 16+ and flags strong violence and language; the Hindi dub sits on the same title as the Malayalam original.

Background
Bramayugam ("the era of madness") is an original story written and directed by Rahul Sadasivan, with dialogue by novelist T. D. Ramakrishnan, drawing on Kerala folklore. It was the first film from Night Shift Studios, a horror-only banner launched by Chakravarthy Ramachandra with YNOT Studios. Sadasivan chose black and white for the 17th-century setting, and filming ran from 17 August to 18 October 2023 in Kochi, Ottapalam and Athirapally.
The Malayalam original opened in cinemas on 15 February 2024, and dubbed versions in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada followed on 23 February 2024. It began streaming on SonyLIV on 15 March 2024. Wikipedia reports it crossed ₹50 crore worldwide by its eleventh day. Mammootty won the Kerala State Film Award for Best Actor for playing Kodumon Potti, and Wikipedia lists him as Best Actor at the 72nd National Film Awards. In February 2026 it was screened at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles.
