The story
In the present day, treasure hunter Brock Lovett searches the wreck of the Titanic for a lost diamond and is contacted by Rose, a woman now over 100, who says she was on board. She recalls April 1912, when, as a 17-year-old, she sailed from Southampton engaged to the rich and controlling Cal Hockley. Unhappy with the life planned for her, Rose meets Jack Dawson, a penniless artist who won his ticket in a card game, and the two begin a romance across the ship's class divide.

Who it suits
Fans of sweeping love stories and historical drama will find a long romance set against a real disaster. At more than three hours, it suits a dedicated movie night, and it includes partial nudity, a sex scene and distressing scenes of people drowning, so it is better for teens and adults.

Background
Titanic blends a fictional love story with accounts of the real sinking of RMS Titanic in April 1912. James Cameron filmed the actual wreck in 1995, and the ship was recreated at Baja Studios in Mexico using a full-scale set, models and computer effects. With a $200 million budget, it was the most expensive film ever made at the time. Paramount released it in the United States and Canada, and 20th Century Fox handled other territories.
It premiered in Tokyo on 1 November 1997 and opened in the United States on 19 December. It was the first film to reach $1 billion, and re-releases took its worldwide total to $2.264 billion. Wikipedia notes it was the first foreign-language film to succeed in India. At the 70th Academy Awards it received 14 nominations and won 11, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Song, tying the record for most wins.
