The story
In the mid-22nd century, humans are mining the valuable mineral unobtanium on Pandora, a lush moon home to the tall, blue-skinned Na'vi. Jake Sully, a former Marine who uses a wheelchair, takes his late twin brother's place in the Avatar programme, which lets him control a genetically engineered Na'vi body with his mind. Sent to win the trust of the Omaticaya clan, Jake is taken in by Neytiri and begins to learn their ways, while the mining company and its military chief grow impatient.

Background
Avatar is the first film in James Cameron's Avatar series, followed by Avatar: The Way of Water (2022) and Avatar: Fire and Ash (2025). Cameron wrote an early treatment in 1994 but waited for visual effects technology to catch up. The film was made with Weta Digital using new motion-capture techniques and 3D cameras, and reunited Cameron with his Titanic producer Jon Landau.
It premiered in London on 10 December 2009 and was released by 20th Century Fox in the United States on 18 December 2009. It was the first film to gross more than $2 billion and, with later re-releases, reached $2.924 billion worldwide. Wikipedia notes it was the highest-grossing film of all time from 2010 to 2019 and again from 2021 to 2026. At the 82nd Academy Awards it received nine nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director, and won three.
