The story
Nakul Kaushik, in his mid-twenties, has a steady job and a girlfriend, Renee, whose mother thinks highly of him. He lives in a crowded Delhi home with his father Jeetu, a railway employee, his mother Priyamvada, his schoolboy brother Gullar and his sharp-tongued grandmother, who never stops needling her daughter-in-law. Then Priyamvada discovers that she is pregnant, and she and Jeetu decide to keep the baby. The news mortifies both sons, and the family soon becomes the talk of relatives, neighbours and friends.

A warm family comedy for parents and grown-up children to watch together, with frank but gentle humour about a late pregnancy. It is rated U/A and runs just over two hours, and Neena Gupta, Gajraj Rao and Surekha Sikri carry much of the comedy.

Background
Badhaai Ho is an original story by Shantanu Srivastava and Akshat Ghildial, with a screenplay by Ghildial. It was produced by Junglee Pictures and Chrome Pictures and shot in Mumbai and Delhi between January and March 2018.
The film opened in cinemas on 18 October 2018. Made on a budget of about ₹29 crore, it grossed about ₹221 crore worldwide, according to Wikipedia, and was the ninth-highest-grossing Hindi film of 2018. It won two National Film Awards: Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment and Best Supporting Actress for Surekha Sikri. At the 64th Filmfare Awards it won four awards, including Best Actress (Critics) for Neena Gupta and the supporting acting awards for Sikri and Gajraj Rao.
The Tamil remake Veetla Vishesham followed. Badhaai Do (11 February 2022) is a spiritual successor with a different story and cast.
