The story
After the Kurukshetra war, Krishna curses Ashwatthama with painful immortality until he can redeem himself. Six thousand years later, in 2898 AD, Kashi is the last city on a ruined Earth, ruled by Supreme Yaskin from the Complex, a floating inverted pyramid. Women from the outskirts are taken for a secret experiment called Project K. When one subject, SUM-80, escapes, she is hunted by Yaskin's forces and by Bhairava, a cocky bounty hunter desperate to earn his way into the Complex.

Who it suits
Fans of big-screen spectacle mixing the Mahabharata with post-apocalyptic science fiction. It is rated U/A but has extended battle violence, and it runs about three hours, ending on a cliffhanger for a planned sequel.

Background
Kalki 2898 AD is a Telugu film written and directed by Nag Ashwin and produced by Vyjayanthi Movies. Wikipedia reports a budget of ₹600 crore. It draws on Hindu scripture and is the first instalment of a planned Kalki Cinematic Universe. The animated series Bujji & Bhairava served as a prelude.
After delays, it opened on 27 June 2024 in Telugu, Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam and Kannada, with AA Films distributing in North India. Reported worldwide grosses range from about ₹1,042 crore to ₹1,100 crore. On 22 August 2024 the Telugu version and its southern dubs began streaming on Prime Video, while the Hindi dub went to Netflix. About six minutes were trimmed for the streaming cut, which is roughly 175 minutes. It won the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment, presented on 18 July 2026. Filming on Kalki 2898 AD: Part 2 began in February 2026.
