The story
Cursed to be born at an inauspicious hour, the demon brothers Hiranyaksha and Hiranyakashipu grow up hostile to the gods. When Hiranyaksha drags Bhudevi, the Earth goddess, beneath the cosmic ocean, Vishnu takes the form of the boar Varaha. Bent on revenge, Hiranyakashipu performs a fierce penance and wins a boon from Brahma that seems to make him impossible to kill, then declares himself god of the universe. His young son Prahlad, however, quietly worships Vishnu, and refuses to give up his faith whatever his father does.
