The story
Bittu, a shy young man in Pune, works at his mother's beauty salon and is still hung up on his childhood friend Bela. During a family trip to their ancestral village in Konkan for a cousin's wedding, he overhears talk about his late father's death and a haunted peepal tree in the forest. Curious, he visits the tree and unknowingly releases Munjya, the spirit of a boy who died decades ago while obsessed with marrying an older girl. Munjya follows Bittu home with demands of his own.

Background
Munjya draws on the munjya, a spirit from Maharashtra's folklore, from a story by Yogesh Chandekar adapted by Niren Bhatt. Dinesh Vijan and Amar Kaushik produced it under Maddock Films, and the title character was created entirely with CGI. It is the third instalment in the Maddock Horror Comedy Universe, after Stree (2018) and Bhediya (2022), and comes before Stree 2.
The film opened on 7 June 2024 after the CBFC passed it with no cuts. Made for about ₹30 crore, it became a sleeper hit, grossing ₹132.13 crore worldwide, and was the eighth highest-grossing Hindi film of 2024. It won Best Special Effects at the 70th Filmfare Awards. It had its world TV premiere on Star Gold on 24 August 2024 and began streaming on Disney+ Hotstar, now JioHotstar, the next day.
