The story
In the small town of Chanderi, people believe a spirit called Stree comes during a four-day festival every year and takes away men who are out at night, leaving only their clothes behind. Residents paint 'O Stree, kal aana' (O Stree, come tomorrow) on their walls, and men stay indoors after dark. Vicky, a skilled ladies' tailor, falls for a mysterious woman who appears only at odd hours. When one of their friends goes missing, Vicky and his friends start digging into the legend.

Who it suits
A light entry point to horror for teenagers and adults, mixing small-town comedy with a few jump scares. Rated U/A at about two hours, it is also the first film in Maddock's horror-comedy universe, so watch it before Stree 2.

Background
Stree is loosely based on the Naale Baa ("come tomorrow") urban legend. It was Amar Kaushik's debut as director, and writers Raj & DK produced it with Dinesh Vijan's Maddock Films. Filming began in January 2018 in Chanderi, with further shooting in Bhopal and Mumbai.
The film opened on 31 August 2018 and grossed ₹180.76 crore against a budget of ₹23–25 crore, according to Bollywood Hungama figures cited by Wikipedia. It received 10 nominations at the 64th Filmfare Awards and won Best Debut Director for Kaushik. It is the first instalment of the Maddock Horror Comedy Universe, followed by Bhediya (2022), Munjya (2024), the direct sequel Stree 2 (15 August 2024) and Thamma (2025). Stree 3 is expected in 2028.
