Background
Shershaah is based on the life of Captain Vikram Batra, who was killed in action in the 1999 Kargil War and posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra, India's highest military decoration. Sidharth Malhotra also plays Batra's twin brother, Vishal. Wikipedia notes that the film departs from the record in places: Batra died instantly from a sniper's shot and did not see his men capture Point 4875.
Dharma Productions and Kaash Entertainment produced the film. It was first scheduled for theatres on 3 July 2020, was postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and premiered directly on Amazon Prime Video on 12 August 2021. It won seven Filmfare Awards, including Best Film and Best Director for Vishnuvardhan. At the 69th National Film Awards it received the Special Jury Award.
