This list covers Hindi films released before 2005 that still hold up and are easy to stream in India today. We have grouped them by era: the 1950s and 1960s, when black-and-white epics and song-led dramas were at their peak; the 1970s and 1980s, from Salim–Javed's action films to Hrishikesh Mukherjee's gentle comedies; and the 1990s and early 2000s, the age of big family romances.
Every pick has a Hindi audio track and was checked on the platform's Indian app or website, with the check date on each title page. Within each era, films are ranked by how well they introduce that period to someone new to older Hindi cinema, so the most influential or easiest-to-love titles come first. Several are long, and the notes give runtimes so you can plan.
On certificates: none of these title pages list a CBFC certificate, so each note describes any violence or mature themes instead.

Sholay
Prime Video198 min
Two small-time crooks, a retired policeman and a feared dacoit: this is the masala Western people still quote line by line, and it topped the BFI's 2002 poll of Indian films.
