The story
In a village in eastern Uttar Pradesh, an ailing farmer is treated by a vaidya from a village across the river and, as the fee, agrees to marry his elder nephew Omkar to the vaidya's elder daughter Roopa. After the wedding, Roopa's lively younger sister Gunja comes to stay and help with the household, and she and Omkar's younger brother Chandan, who began by teasing each other, slowly fall in love. Sachin Pilgaonkar plays Chandan and Sadhana Singh plays Gunja.

Background
Nadiya Ke Paar is based on the first half of Keshav Prasad Mishra's Hindi novel Kohbar Ki Shart, and Mishra is credited as the writer. Most of it was shot in Bijaipur and Rajepur villages in Jaunpur district's Kerakat tehsil. The dialogue is Hindi with a strong Bhojpuri and Awadhi flavour, and Ravindra Jain wrote and composed the songs.
Rajshri Productions released the film on 10 October 1982. Made for a reported ₹18 lakh, it earned about ₹5.4 crore and was one of the highest-grossing films of the year. Rajshri later reworked the story as Sooraj Barjatya's Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! (1994), so viewers who know that film will recognise the outline.
