The story
Poonam, orphaned as a child, grows up in the small town of Madhupur with her loving uncle Krishnakant and an aunt who resents her. In Delhi, businessman Harish Chandra Bajpayee receives a marriage proposal from Poonam's family for his younger son Prem, who wants to focus on his career first. Prem agrees to meet her, the two warm to each other, and they get engaged. As the families spend time together before the wedding, Prem and Poonam slowly fall in love.

Background
Vivah was written and directed by Sooraj R. Barjatya for Rajshri Productions. It is a remake of Rajshri's Bengali film Subhodrishti (2005), with changes to the plot, and Barjatya has said the story began with a newspaper article his father read in 1988. It was the fourth film pairing Shahid Kapoor and Amrita Rao, and Ravindra Jain composed the music.
The film opened on 10 November 2006. Rajshri released it on its own website at the same time as in cinemas, which Wikipedia describes as a first for an Indian film. It grossed about ₹49.6 crore worldwide on a budget of around ₹8 crore, the tenth-highest total of the year. Kapoor and Rao were nominated for Best Actor and Best Actress at the Screen Awards. A Telugu dub, Parinayam, was also released, and Rajshri's Tamil and Telugu YouTube channels carry the dubbed versions.
