The story
Crown prince Vijay Singh of Pritampur is about to be crowned king, but his stiff, stubborn manner has strained ties with his fiancée, Princess Maithili of Devgarh, and with his estranged half-siblings. After an attempt on his life leaves him badly injured, the palace's loyal Diwan finds Prem, a carefree stage actor who looks exactly like Vijay and admires Maithili. Prem agrees to take the prince's place, and his warmth starts to change the royal household.

Background
Prem Ratan Dhan Payo is Sooraj R. Barjatya's fourth film with Salman Khan, after Maine Pyar Kiya (1989), Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! (1994) and Hum Saath-Saath Hain (1999). Rajshri Productions produced it and Fox Star Studios distributed it. Wikipedia reports that its core plot is inspired by the 2012 South Korean film Masquerade, itself loosely based on Anthony Hope's The Prisoner of Zenda. The title comes from Mirabai's hymn "Payo Ji Maine Ram Ratan Dhan Payo". Filming ran from June 2014 to September 2015 in Rajkot, Gondal, Udaipur, Athirappilly Falls and Mumbai, with songs by Himesh Reshammiya.
The film opened on 12 November 2015 for Diwali, alongside Tamil (Meimarandhen Paaraayo) and Telugu (Prema Leela) dubs. With a worldwide gross of about ₹432 crore, it was the second-highest-grossing Hindi film of 2015.
