The story
Karan, a village mechanic, leaves for Dubai to earn money for his daughter Suman's wedding and asks his old friend Kishan, now a wealthy city businessman, to keep her at his home. Kishan's son Prem befriends Suman and insists that a boy and a girl can be just friends. When a scheming family associate's nephew mocks them at a party, Suman pulls away, and the two realise their feelings run deeper. Kishan, however, sees Karan as beneath his status.

Background
Maine Pyar Kiya was Sooraj Barjatya's first film as director and Salman Khan's first lead role; Bhagyashree made her screen debut in it. Rajshri Productions produced and distributed it, with songs composed by Raamlaxman and lyrics by Asad Bhopali. It was shot at Film City in Mumbai and in Ooty.
The film opened on 29 December 1989. Wikipedia reports a worldwide gross of about ₹45 crore, which made it the highest-grossing Indian film of the 1980s. Out of twelve Filmfare nominations it won six: Best Film, Best Director, Best Lyricist, Best Male Playback Singer, Best Male Debut and Best Female Debut. It was dubbed into Telugu as Prema Paavuraalu (1992) and into Spanish as Te Amo. Wikipedia notes the running time varies by version, from 125 to 192 minutes.
