If you have not seen it yet, start with Stree (2018), the Rajkummar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor horror comedy on Prime Video. This list is for what comes next: Hindi horror comedies with the same mix of jokes and jump scares, folklore horror built on village legends, and a few straight scares for when you want the laughs switched off. Stree 2 comes first because it continues the same story. Bhediya and Munjya are not listed because their streaming home has not yet been re-confirmed on a platform page.

Every pick has a Hindi audio track and streams in India on Netflix, Prime Video, SonyLIV or YouTube, checked on the platform's Indian app or site, with the check date on each title page. Picks are ranked by how closely they match Stree's tone, then grouped by style.

The comedies are mostly rated U/A, while Tumbbad and Go Goa Gone are rated A, so check the notes before a family viewing. More in all horror films and funny films.

The same story

  1. 1

    Stree 2: Sarkate Ka Aatank

    Prime VideoCBFC U/A149 min

The direct sequel, and the obvious next step after Stree. Vicky, Rudra, Bittu and Jana are back in Chanderi, this time up against a headless demon called Sarkata, so the small-town banter and folklore scares carry straight over. Rated U/A and running 149 minutes, it suits friends and families with teenagers, and it plays best if the first film is fresh in your mind.

Horror comedies

    Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2

    NetflixCBFC U/A143 min

If you want Stree's balance of slapstick and spirit lore, start here. Kartik Aaryan plays a carefree young man who poses as a psychic, Rooh Baba, inside a long-sealed Rajasthan mansion, while Rajpal Yadav and Sanjay Mishra handle the broad comedy. It is rated U/A and runs 143 minutes, which makes it a good group or family pick with teens, though the possession scenes can frighten younger children.

    Roohi

    Netflix134 min

Rajkummar Rao leads another small-town horror comedy built on a local custom, this time a village where men kidnap the women they want to marry, and the abducted bride turns out to be possessed. Varun Sharma is his partner in the banter. It runs 134 minutes and Netflix rates it U/A 16+ for comic violence and ghostly scenes; watch it for the jokes more than the frights.

  3. 4

    Bhool Bhulaiyaa

    NetflixCBFC U/A154 min

The 2007 original is the older answer to Stree: a Varanasi palace, a legend about the wronged dancer Manjulika, a locked room, and Akshay Kumar as a very unusual psychiatrist, with Paresh Rawal and Rajpal Yadav for laughs. The scares are milder, it is rated U/A, and at 154 minutes it is long, so plan a full evening with older children around it.

  4. 5

    Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3

    NetflixCBFC U/A158 min

Kartik Aaryan returns as Rooh Baba, now a fake ghostbuster in Kolkata who takes money from a royal family to help win back their Bengal palace, said to be haunted by Manjulika. It is a big, festive entry with musical numbers and lots of slapstick. Rated U/A and running 158 minutes, with some intense haunting scenes, it suits families with teenagers and fans of the second film.

  5. 6

    Go Goa Gone

YouTube (free, official channel)CBFC A112 min

For adults who enjoyed Stree's gang of friends bickering their way through a crisis, this Raj & DK comedy swaps a small-town spirit for an island full of zombies after a rave. Saif Ali Khan, Kunal Khemu and Vir Das lead. It is rated A for drug use, strong language and gory violence, so it is not for children, and it runs 112 minutes.

Folklore horror

  1. 7

    Tumbbad

    Prime VideoCBFC A108 min

The pick for anyone who loved the folklore side of Stree more than the jokes. This is serious folk horror: a man from a rain-soaked Maharashtra village spends three decades chasing a treasure tied to Hastar, a forgotten, cursed deity. Rated A for disturbing imagery and violence, it runs a compact 108 minutes and suits adults who prefer slow dread to jump scares.

  2. 8

    Bulbbul

    Netflix94 min

Like Stree, Bulbbul turns on a village legend about a female spirit, here a witch with backward-turned feet blamed for the deaths of men in 1880s Bengal. The mood is Gothic and sombre rather than funny. It runs just 94 minutes, Netflix rates it U/A 16+, and it deals with child marriage, abuse and sexual violence, with bloody killings, so it is not for children.

  3. 9

    Bramayugam

SonyLIV (choose Hindi in the audio menu)139 min

A Malayalam folk horror film shot in black and white, with the Hindi dub on the same SonyLIV title. In 17th-century Malabar, a fleeing folk singer takes shelter in a crumbling mansion with a strange old master and hears about a chathan, a vengeful goblin spirit. It runs 139 minutes and SonyLIV rates it U/A 16+ for strong violence and language. Good for Tumbbad fans.

Straight scares

  1. 10

    Shaitaan

    NetflixCBFC U/A132 min

For viewers who want the scares turned up and the laughs switched off. Ajay Devgn, R. Madhavan and Jyothika star in a farmhouse siege where a charming stranger uses black magic to take hold of a family's daughter. It is rated U/A and runs 132 minutes, but it has disturbing scenes of a child being controlled and harmed, plus violence, so skip it with younger children.

  2. 11

    1920

    Prime Video129 min

Vikram Bhatt's period chiller is the old-school haunted-house option: in 1920, an architect and his wife move into a Palampur manor where two architects before him died, and she soon senses a presence. There is no comedy, just possession and exorcism. Prime Video lists it as U/A 13+, it runs 129 minutes, and the exorcism scenes may be too much for younger children.

    Ghost Stories

    Netflix144 min

Four short horror films from Zoya Akhtar, Anurag Kashyap, Dibakar Banerjee and Karan Johar, handy if you want to sample several styles of Hindi horror in one sitting, from a nurse in a lonely flat to a near-empty small town. It runs 144 minutes and Netflix rates it U/A 16+; it includes cannibalism, body horror and disturbing pregnancy scenes, so it is for adult viewers.
